Cultural Identity and Belonging: Living Between Worlds

Hi, I’m Fizza. As a therapist, I often explore cultural identity and belonging with people who feel like they’re living between different worlds. It’s a question I’ve carried too: where do I truly belong?

Sometimes it feels like you’re speaking two languages at once. Not just in words, but in how you think, respond, and show up depending on where you are.

What It Feels Like to Navigate Multiple Identities

I remember sitting in class and hearing my friends talk about their families. Their stories felt familiar in some ways, and completely different in others. At home, my traditions felt natural and grounding. Outside of that space, they sometimes felt misunderstood or invisible.

If this resonates, you’re not alone. Many people who move between cultures experience a quiet tension—feeling like they don’t fully fit in any one place. At times, it can feel isolating. At other times, it can create a deeper awareness of both yourself and others.

Cultural Identity and Belonging Is More Than Fitting In

Belonging isn’t just about being included. It’s about feeling safe enough to be fully yourself.

For many people, this means navigating different expectations, values, and ways of being. You might notice that you adjust parts of yourself depending on the space you’re in. That doesn’t mean you’re being inauthentic—it often means you’ve learned how to move through complex environments.

That in-between space can feel uncomfortable. And it doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means your identity is layered, shaped by multiple experiences and histories.

Finding Strength in Your Cultural Identity

There’s a quiet strength in learning how to move between worlds.

Even if it hasn’t always felt like it, this experience can shape how you relate to others and how you understand yourself. Many people begin to notice strengths like:

  • A deeper sense of empathy for different perspectives
  • The ability to adapt across environments
  • Awareness of both spoken and unspoken social dynamics

These aren’t small things. They’re meaningful parts of your identity.

How Therapy Can Support Cultural Identity and Belonging

In therapy, the goal is to create a space where your full identity is welcome.

Through psychotherapy services, we explore how your culture, faith, and lived experiences shape your relationships and your sense of self. This work isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about understanding yourself with more clarity and compassion.

Sometimes, these experiences don’t just live in thoughts—they show up in the body too. When that’s the case, supports like registered massage therapy or physiotherapy can complement talk therapy, especially when stress or past experiences feel physically held.

Making Space for Your Whole Self

Belonging isn’t about shrinking yourself to fit into a space. It’s about making room for all parts of who you are.

That might look like letting go of the idea that you have to choose one identity over another. It might mean noticing where you feel most at ease, even in small moments. Over time, these shifts can help you feel more grounded and less pulled in different directions.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

There isn’t a perfect answer to where you belong.

For many people, the process becomes less about finding a single place and more about building a sense of belonging within themselves. That can take time, and it often shows up in subtle ways.

You might notice:

  • Moments where things feel clearer
  • A growing sense of comfort in your identity
  • Even a bit of humour in how different parts of you come together

And all of that matters.
